What are large scale trains?

Large scale trains are typically ride-on railroads in 4 3/4 inch and 7 1/2 inch gauge. At Rocky Mountain Rails, members and guests ride on top of the train rather than inside it, and the club operates a dual-gauge layout.

How much does equipment cost?

Locomotives generally range from about $1,500 to $15,000, while riding cars often range from $500 to $5,000 depending on size, builder, and features.

Where can I buy large scale train equipment?

Popular sources include Discover Live Steam, Backyard Train Co. in Denver, club member sales, and specialty listings on other large scale train club websites.

Where is the tracksite located?

Rocky Mountain Rails operates near Waterton Canyon, south of Chatfield Reservoir, on Denver Water property with restricted access for authorized members and guests.

Does Rocky Mountain Rails offer public train rides?

No. The club is not open to the general public for train rides. Interested visitors can contact the club to request an appointment and learn more about membership and visiting opportunities.

When does the club run trains?

The club usually schedules runs on the first Saturday of each month, weather permitting. Members and their immediate families can access the facility at other times as well.

Can I bring pets or support animals?

Per the land use agreement, pets and emotional support animals are not permitted at the tracksite. Certified service animals are allowed.
